A systematic method for network topology reconfiguration with limited link additions

چکیده
As a promising approach to improve network survivability, reliability and flexibility, topology reconfiguration is extremely important for modern networked infrastructures. In particular, for an existing network and the limited link addition resources, it is valuable to determine how to optimally allocate the new link resources, such that the resulting network is the most robust and efficient. In this paper, we investigate the problem of network topology reconfiguration (NTR) optimization with limited link additions. A dynamic robustness metric is developed to quantitatively characterize the robust connectivity and the efficiency under either random or targeted attack. We show that the NTR optimization with limited link additions is NP-hard. Therefore, to approximately solve the problem, we develop a preferential configuration node-protecting cycle (PCNC) method for sequential link additions. Analysis showed that PCNC method provides an approximate optimal solution under the dynamic robustness metric when compared with the optimal solution found by exhaustive search. Simulation results also showed that PCNC method effectively improves the network robustness and communication efficiency at the cost of least added link resources. & 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Preserving Survivability During Logical Topology Reconfiguration in WDM Ring Networks
We consider the design of reconfiguring logical topologies over physical WDM ring networks. The logical topology consists of the same set of nodes as the physical topology, and the links of the logical topology are lightpaths established (or embedded) over the physical topology. The logical topology is said survivable if the failure of any single physical link does not disconnect the logical to...
متن کاملProviding Software Support for Reconfigurable Networks
Workload patterns in Data Center Networks (DCNs) vary by time. As such, deployment of reconfigurable topologies to handle these varying workloads is a promising approach. Network efficiency can be improved by tailoring the network topology to the workload, which can reduce the average path length thus supporting more flows simultaneously. However, without proper software support, physically alt...

In power systems, reconfiguration is one of the simplest and most low-cost methods to reach many goals such as self-healing, reliability improvement, and power loss reduction, without including any additional components. Regarding the expansion of distribution networks, communications become more complicate and the number of parameters increases, which makes the reconfiguration problem infeasib...
متن کاملA Local Topology Reconfiguration Mechanism to Improve the Energy Efficiency in Wireless Sensor Network
A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a self organizing wireless network system consists of number of energy limited sensor nodes. Since sensor nodes are battery powered devices, they have limited processing and transmission power and with limited communication ability. In order to transmit sensing data to receiver effectively, it is necessary to design an energy efficient routing protocol for WSN...
متن کاملDynamic Load Balancing for WDM-based Packet Networks
We develop load balancing algorithms for WDM-based packet networks in which the average traffic between nodes is dynamically changing. In WDM-based packet networks, routers are connected to each other using wavelengths (lightpaths) to form a logical network topology. This logical topology may be reconfigured by rearranging the lightpaths connecting the routers. The goal of our load balancing al...
